This past weekend, my husband & I watched an old movie entitled Lilies of the Field. The movie was about 5 nuns who came from Europe to Arizona to build a chapel for local residents to worship. Mother nun along with her companions, prayed for the resources like money & building materials to build the chapel. They had living quarters that needed some repairs & minimal food to eat. The sisters planted & tilled a garden & had a milk cow.
A young man who was a construction contractor was driving cross country. His car needed water & he pulled into the first driveway he saw. The driveway took him to the sisters. Mother nun was a very determined woman who wouldn’t take no for an answer. When she saw the young man, she touched the cross around her neck & looked up to heaven whispering something. I’m guessing she was thanking the Lord Almighty for sending him to them. She allowed the young man to put water in his car. She then let him know that the roof needed repair. He rendered his services to repair the roof. He looked around and saw only the 5 women. He saw them gardening & working around the place. He also saw an unfinished building. There were no more building materials to finish the building. Before leaving, Mother nun asked him to stay on & help with other maintenances. He said his goodbyes & went down the lane. He stopped just before getting onto the highway & checked his wallet that had only a few dollars. He then turned back to the nuns thinking he might be able to work & make more money for his cross country traveling. Of course, there was no money to be made.
While he was there, he worked on doing repairs & taught the women English. In return, he was given food for his labor. He slept in his car. On Sunday, the nuns would walk to the nearest town that had no building for service to aid the priest in services. The priest was a traveling priest who held services for the townspeople on the side of the road.
Mother nun was a woman of great faith. She believed that God had sent the young man to them to aid them in their efforts to build the chapel. She & her companions wrote letters to various corporations & clubs asking for funding or for the resources needed to complete the chapel. She was turned by all of them. This was the only time throughout the movie that her faith wavered.
She introduced the young man to the people who worshipped at the roadside services & told them he was building them a chapel for all of them to worship in. Part of the building materials were donated & several of the townspeople showed up to help the young man in the building process. When those materials ran out, more were donated & the chapel was completed by all their joint efforts.
Mother nun would always hold on to the cross she wore around her neck & look to the heavens while praying & believing that God would supply for their needs. Her faith was unwavering.
Psalms 37:5 says, ‘Commit your way to the Lord. Trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.’
Philippians 4:19 says, ‘And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.’
Whatever you are praying & believing God for, let your faith be unwavering. Whatever your situation, KNOW without a doubt that Almighty God is listening. He cares for you & all your needs whether physical, relational, emotional, spiritual, or financial. He wants to hear from you & wants to supply for any need you have. My family prayed for 40 years for my dad to give his heart & life to Jesus. He served the Lord for only a few years, but the fact that he served Jesus is what matters. Some of our prayers are answered quickly while others take time. DON’T GIVE UP. The answer to your prayers might be on the horizon of your unwavering faith.
